This event has been a dream of mine for a long time now - a creative workshop inspired by Dia de Los Muertos, the Mexican day of the dead!
Dia de Los Muertos is traditional Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1st + 2nd, where families create an altar (ofrenda) decorated with beautiful marigolds, candles and the photos of loved ones who have passed on.
Its a time of remembrance and it is believed that on this night, the veil between the realms is thinnest, meaning spirits can pass between and visit their loved ones again.
Families decorate their altar with their loved ones favourite snacks and trinkets to invite them back to the land of the living in celebration.
In Mexican culture, it is believed that you have 2 deaths. The day you die, and the day the last person on earth dies that remembers your name or tells your story. We think so too, and that’s worth celebrating!
So, just as we believe at Ghlór Mná, this event is a celebration of storytelling as fundamental to keeping our loved ones alive! ⚡🌛✨
The colourful sugar skulls represent the sweetness of life, and families leave them on the ofrenda too! In the Pixar movie Coco, all of the lost souls return as sugar skulls.
This workshop is taking place in collaboration with @taquilagalway taqueria in the heart of Galway city!
The morning will begin as always with some snacks, music and meditation. We’ll move through guided creative activities like painting and decorating our own sugar skull masks, before moving into the story telling + writing element, finishing with a delicious Mexican brunch which will be included in your ticket!
This is a celebration of loved ones passed, so I will be inviting everyone to bring along a picture of the person(s) we are remembering if you wish. The lovely owners of Taquila, Melissa and Carlitos have invited us to share their memory on their ofrenda. 💓
This will be a joyous occasion of storytelling and remembrance centred around our philosophy here at Ghlór Mná that "no story is too ordinary to tell".
This event is for over 16's and will be open to persons of all genders.
